One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others of the Day: Hint: It’s the one with the cover story about how it’s completely okay, if not beneficial, to feel unease about future uncertainties, as opposed to, say, riot in the streets until sh*t gets done.
Sadly, this is a fairly common occurrence.

Some of my more loyal followers have probably heard, but I was tremendously honoured this school year to receive the “Dave Stillwell Arranging Award”. It’s one of the few awards given out by Humber that recognizes specifically achievement in arranging / composition. While I was proud of my course assignments in general, I feel a significant reason that I received this award was due to the work on my musical.
I’d like to repeat the sentiment I said when I received the reward, which is that I would not have been able to even attempt Soon I WIll Be Invincible without the tremendous support I felt from everyone in my life. I’ve said it before and I’ll said it again to all those reading: For your encouragement and inspiration, I thank you. I hope I’ll get a chance to make it up to you all someday.

The End is Here

It’s official. I’ve handed in all my assignments and written all my exams. All that remains is a performance that will be more fun than taxing, and third year will be complete.

Looking back, it was a fairly crazy year. I mean the first half wasn’t so bad, but working on Soon I Will Be Invincible in the second semester just about killed me. Being on the other side of it now with not much to work on, I feel like that was a time where I was closer to an ideal balance in terms of work / leisure. A burgeoning workaholic am I.

I won’t be updating nearly as regularly over the summer, mostly because I won’t have much to talk about. Most of my posts will be, “Well, played a lot of Starcraft, did some arranging, played a few gigs.” And that could be tiresome. I will post musical novelties here and there as I find them, and if anything big comes up. I’ll music directing in July so I may have some thoughts on that as well. But for now, farewell, have a great summer, and I will see you for sure in September.

What’s Playing at the Roxy?

Can’t talk long internet, I’ve got a full day of music ahead of me.

This past week was a week of no regular classes. It was instead spent working on final assignments, all which are due this coming week. There were a lot of them. A few still remain. While working on my final arranging assignment I noticed a strange exploratory characteristic begin to emerge by the end of it. Changing up the time signature, using highly chromatic harmony, abrupt shifts in style. I’m not sure how it will translate to performance, but if I’m trying out new things I suppose the assignment should be considered a success.

Another assignment due is music business. This one, while quite involved, was very interesting to me as someone with somewhat unique career aspirations. I learnt that it is quite within the realm of possibility to make a living doing what I wish to do. And that’s all I really need to know to keep myself going at this point. The assignment certainly focused my goals and solidified my methods. All in all quite useful.

Anyway, I’m off soon to have my arranging assignment recorded and play on other recordings, an activity which will take the rest of the day. This evening I am playing for a performance of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It will be good to get back in the pit, even if just for one night.

Next week is my last true week of school work, the following one just being performances which will be plain old fun. Hope everyone’s getting their homework done.

It’s Not a Problem It’s Just a Challenge

Today is my birthday. I’ll resist doing the speech from Fellowship.

I have many final assignments due in the coming weeks, most of which I’ve taken a stab at, none of which are near completion. I think it’s partially psychological, coming down from performing a show that I had written, that I had slaved over for months, now reduced to writing biographies on other people and essays on Existentialism. That’s life I suppose. I’m confident they’ll all get done.

An interesting thing has happened though. I find myself much more frequently in the mood to write than I was before I started Soon I Will Be Invincible. Unfortunate that I have other things to be concerned with now. I hope it keeps up though.

No interesting birthday plans for the day. Homework, maybe a nice dinner out with my lovely partner-in-crime. As my inbox quickly fills with notifications from Facebook, allow me to say here first thank you very much for all the birthday wishes. It’s wonderful to know that I am cared about (even just on Facebook).

I did put a new audio sample up from the show this week, if you missed it go check it out and let me know what you think! I may be releasing little samples like that here and there as I work through mixing so I’ll keep you posted.
