One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others of the Day: Hint: It’s the one with the cover story about how it’s completely okay, if not beneficial, to feel unease about future uncertainties, as opposed to, say, riot in the streets until sh*t gets done.

Sadly, this is a fairly common occurrence.

Some of my more loyal followers have probably heard, but I was tremendously honoured this school year to receive the “Dave Stillwell Arranging Award”. It’s one of the few awards given out by Humber that recognizes specifically achievement in arranging / composition. While I was proud of my course assignments in general, I feel a significant reason that I received this award was due to the work on my musical.

I’d like to repeat the sentiment I said when I received the reward, which is that I would not have been able to even attempt Soon I WIll Be Invincible without the tremendous support I felt from everyone in my life. I’ve said it before and I’ll said it again to all those reading: For your encouragement and inspiration, I thank you. I hope I’ll get a chance to make it up to you all someday.

The End is Here

 It’s official.
A workshop performance of the musical that I have been working on for nearly a year will be happening at Humber College on March 28th, 8:30pm.

This project has utterly consumed me since November, and I am very excited to present what I have so far. It is definitely the most challenging thing I have ever put myself up to, and it feels like a big step towards where I want to be in the future.

It is inspired by an Austin Grossman novel of the same name.

Click on the picture for a preview of the music.

Prepare Your Minds

Once again, I must apologize. Not being overly impressed with the score the first time through, I decided to pay closer attention this viewing. What did I find?

I misjudged it. Firstly it’s a very sparse score, and when it is not being used in obvious places (the opening theme for example or during the *spoiler* “King’s speech” *end spoiler*) it is so subtly placed that I missed it on first viewing. Alexandre Desplat’s touches are so finessed that there is hardly any evidence he was there. When the score does get a feature role in a scene it is still understated, refined as any good royal should be. Not flashy, but still keeping a regal air. Perfectly suited to the mood of the film.

In any case this piece my favorite, from a harmonic, instrumental, and functional view. From the plain, pleasant opening theme of the film slowly blossoms a bouyant, bubbling number that finally bursts to a triumphant finish. Enjoy.

A Line of Greens and Blues

 Hey guys.
